Lot Essay:After his first marriage to Valentine Hugo in 1919, Jean Hugo remarried to the Englishwoman Lauretta Hope-Nicholson in 1949. Assistant editor of the Burlington Magazine under Tancred Borenius and co-producer of the Ballet magazine, she relocated to Paris following WWII, in order to meet artists. Together with Hugo, they had seven children (2 boys and 5 daughters), several of whom pursued artistic careers. The present work depicts, from left to right, the artist’s wife Lauretta, their eldest daughter Marie (b. 1951)—herself a painter—and Caroline, Lauretta’s sister.
